Updaters are awesome for convenience, but convenience comes at a price, and such as getting outdated addons (happened rather often with WM), or having to deal with ads and stuff. Manually updating addons seems to be THE nightmare (so much so I don't actually update them on a regular basis =X) but sometimes it's probably the better way out for the moment.
