Tanking on a Warrior is all about planning and execution. Pre-plan pull, mark targets, pre-plan moves (who you will hit, with what attacks, and when), and then following that plan faithfully (at least fairly so) while being prepared for those little curveballs thrown your way by your peers and by the mobs your actually fighting.

As you do it more, you begin to do it very quickly, and you learn to do it on the fly. With practice and effort, you'll find yourself outpacing your healer, because you're doing it so fast they aren't getting the mana breaks they are used to, and you may have gotten used to them always having mana the next time you pull, so watch out. Good luck!

I recently had to respec Tree as my guild was short max level healers. I am enjoying it but I will roll your two points into my one experience.

I hate soloing as a tree. It is boring and I am always unsure if I can actually solo something.

I LOVED tanking and it IS hard. I absolutely enjoyed the complexity and responsibility and felt like when we survived it was as much my tanking as the healing. Soloing was also VERY fun. I miss it.

I'm hoping dual specs are implemented soon. I know mine will be Tree / Bear and I'll spend most of my time in Bear and only swap to Tree for instancing/raiding.

Try feral gear in resto spec + cat form.

Much better than attempting to use spells.

Or just wait for dual spec.

I posted this on my blog and realized I should have posted it here:

Try a Boomkin spec in an instance. With the Eclipse talent it’s fun to:

1. Moonfire
2. Insect Swarm
3. Spam Wrath until it crits and procs Eclipse
4. Spam Starfire for 6k crits

I’m on the top of the damage charts on my instance runs.

Plus the AE is fun, too. Hurricane doesn’t have a cooldown anymore, Starfall is fire and forget and your Treants can help as well. Sure, Hunters and Mages can still out-AE me on the damage meters, but I can definitely add considerable damage these days.

I tanked a TINY bit in BC with my druid. I OT'd a Kara run late in the game, when everyone was WAY outgearing the instance. I also tanked Crypts once early on in BC's release, and I think I might have tanked maybe one other time. I only ever did it really when people were desperate for a tank. Now I intend to make a bigger investment. :)

Grats on the 2nd level 80 :)
I guess you can't wait for dual spec to come (just like me). The part about tree soloing suck, is what keeps me from speccing resto. But then again, I get enough tanking work as feral.
I also agree, that tanking is the hardest wow-job. After an evening of tanking, I'm quite tired. I think tanking in Wrath got harder as well. Sure, we all got decent aoe tanking abilities. But now we have to tank a big bunch of mobs all the time, while in BC, we used some crowd control and acutally tanked less mobs at a time.

[...] But don’t dump your Boomkin/Cat leveling gear just yet if you are still grinding through Wrath quests for cash and Achievements. As Part Time Druid notes, soloing as Tree spec is horrendously slow. [...]

Cool man! I thought you'd tanked a lot in the past on a 70 feral, must have gotten the wrong impression there.

Yep, I think its the hardest job in the game for all the reasons you mention. Those things are second nature to me now. Tanks are proud creatures. We practice our tankcraft with pride, we love it and we cant live without it. Good luck to you.
